On the water

Hoi An happens on the water: round boats, lantern boats, the run out to Cham Island.

The Thu Bon splits into channels behind the old town and runs out to the sea through coconut palms. Three kinds of boat day, what it costs to get aboard each one, and when it is worth going.

Where to begin

The old town, the water palms, the Cham towers, and the road north.

A UNESCO old town you can walk end to end in an hour, coconut channels ten minutes out, brick sanctuaries inland, and a pass road that climbs into the cloud. Six starting points, and the best day out in each.

The Ancient Town

Hoi An’s old town shuts to traffic at dusk and turns the colour of its lanterns.

Merchant houses in ochre plaster, Chinese assembly halls, a covered bridge the Japanese quarter built in the sixteenth century, and a heritage coupon that gets you inside five of them. Walk it once by day for the buildings, once after dark for the light.

Walk the old town
The Hoi An table

Hoi An eats like the port it was: cao lau, white roses, banh mi at a counter.

The cao lau noodles are made with water from one well in town and travel about as far as the next street. Book the market walk before the heat, the class that finishes as lunch, and the evening crawl that ends at a bia hoi table.

What it costs

What a day out in Hoi An actually costs.

Every tour on the site, grouped by price. Most of the town’s best days come in under the fare to the airport.

Under $50

Basket boats, lantern rides, old-town walks, cooking classes and the coffee benches.

$50–150

Full days: My Son with a guide, Ba Na Hills and the Golden Bridge, Hue over the pass, Cham Island by speedboat.

Only in Hoi An

Three Hoi An habits you will not find further down the coast.

Old towns and beach bars run the length of Vietnam. A round bamboo boat, a silk lantern that folds flat, and a river carrying candles do not.

Cam Thanh

The Basket Boat

The thung chai is a round bamboo bowl sealed with resin, built round because the colonial administration taxed boats and a bowl is not a boat. Fishermen still work them through the water palms at Cam Thanh, laying crab lines and casting nets. Visitors get the spin as well: one man, one oar, the boat turning on its own axis fast enough to throw water over the rim.

Silk and bamboo

The Folding Lantern

The frame is split bamboo, soaked until it bends, tied at both ends and stretched with silk. The Hoi An version collapses flat, which is the only reason so many of them survive a suitcase. An hour on a workshop bench and you leave with one you tied yourself, folded down to the size of a book.

The Hoai after dark

Floating the Lanterns

Paper lanterns on wooden saucers, a candle inside, set on the water from a low rowing boat. On the fourteenth night of each lunar month the old town cuts its electric light and the river carries almost all the lighting there is. The rest of the year it happens every evening anyway, on a smaller scale and with fewer people watching.

Book ahead

The Hoi An days that run on somebody else’s timetable.

Most of this town can be arranged over breakfast the same morning. These run on the state of the sea, one cable car, the position of the sun and a fixed seating chart.

  1. 01Cham Island Tour Snorkeling -Sunbathing – Nice Beach – SpeedboatThe speedboat only sails in flat water and the crossing is called off outright through the rough months. Take the first calm day you are offered.
  2. 02Ba Na Hills – Golden Bridge Deluxe Small groupOne cable car carries everybody up the mountain. Go on the earliest departure, or queue behind every coach out of Da Nang.
  3. 03My Son Sanctuary Early Morning w. Champa Food BrunchThe towers face the morning sun and there is no shade on the site by ten. The dawn departures are the ones that fill.
  4. 04Hoi An Memories Show & Hoi An Impression Theme Park TicketThe show runs once a night to a fixed seating chart, and the blocks worth having go days ahead.
When the river comes up

Hoi An floods most autumns, and the town carries on regardless.

From roughly October into December the Thu Bon rises and the low streets of the old town go under. Shopkeepers lift stock to the first floor, boats replace bicycles on Bach Dang, and the river trips stop. It is also when everything under a roof is at its best: a kitchen, a lantern bench, a coffee counter, a quiet massage room.

Out of town

Everything worth leaving Hoi An for sits inside three hours.

Cham towers inland at My Son, a cable car up Ba Na, cave pagodas cut into the Marble Mountains, and the imperial city at Hue over the Hai Van pass. All of them work as a day out, and all of them start early.
